​Prerequisites

UBC Gunn IMS training is only available to physicians and highly-trained physiotherapists who meet prerequisites.

To meet prerequisites, physiotherapists must have:
1. a minimum of  4 years clinical experience treating patients post-licensure (i.e., not including student placements) in either a musculoskeletal and/or neuromuscular physiotherapy setting

Please provide  a letter from your employer(s) confirming this clinical experience. Letters must come directly from the employer with whom you gained this clinical experience.   References need to be on the workplace letterhead, signed by the workplace owner/director/supervisor; must state that the caseload was musculoskeletal or neuromusculoskeletal, and must contain the typical number of weekly hours worked and employment start and end dates (if applicable).

Note: the 4-year period must be 4 years full time clinical experience. For example, 4 years part time will not meet the prerequisite 4 years clinical experience.

2. a minimum level of postgraduate training in either the orthopaedic/musculoskeletal or dry needling fields. Standardised prerequisites accepted by the program are ​   ONE    of the following (a. or    b.):

  ONE  of the following (a.   or    b.):

a. Eligible dry needling training:
i)   
Acupuncture Canada   CAFCI designation   (completion of the Level 1 courses Parts 1, 2A & 3A /A1, A2, A3   program   and  examinations)
ii)  Acupuncture Canada   
ACC designation -  Level 1  ( i.e. completion of both the AA1   and  AA2 courses    and    the associated   Level 1 examination)
iii)   
Puncture physiothérapique avec aiguilles sèches: cours de base
iv)   Certificate of Medical Acupuncture,   Medical Acupuncture Program (MAP) under the Division of Continuous Professional Learning, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (University of Alberta)
v) McMaster University Contemporary Acupuncture Program
vi)  Acupuncture Canada Dry Needling Program   - successful completion of Level 1    and     Level 2
vii)    Other dry needling training   -   may   be accepted as meeting  the prerequisite  standard. Please submit evidence of your training  for consideration. Your training will be assessed in comparison with our standardised prerequisites considering hours of training, examination procedures (theory and/or practical exams, case study submissions etc) and the calibre of the teaching organisation

b. Eligible post-graduate musculoskeletal training:
i) Level 3 (upper   and    lower)
  of the Intermediate Diploma of Manual Therapy certified by the Orthopaedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA)
ii)   
UBC Graduate Certificate in Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapy (GCOMPT),
iii)   Manual Therapy Masters Degrees eg UWO Master of Clinical Science, Advanced Health Care Practice, Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Practice
v)  SPC Diploma Holders (credentialling program of Sport Physiotherapy Canada),  or

iv) Other musculoskeletal post-graduate training  -   may  be accepted as meeting  the prerequisite  standard. Please submit evidence of your training  for consideration.   Your training will be assessed in comparison with our standardised prerequisites considering hours of training, examination procedures (theory and/or practical exams, case study submissions etc) and the calibre of the teaching organisation.

Please note: if you submit alternative prerequisites for consideration, i.e.: 
a. Eligible dry needling training, vii) Other dry needling training, or  
b. Eligible post-graduate musculoskeletal training, iv) Other musculoskeletal post-graduate training,
you must provide:
i. A  summary of the related hours of training
ii. Details regarding any assessment procedures
iii. A  website link for the program/course, and
iv. Proof of attendance, e.g. certificate


Please note: if you submit alternative prerequisites for consideration, i.e.: 
a. Eligible dry needling training, vii) Other dry needling training, or  
b. Eligible post-graduate musculoskeletal training, iii) Other musculoskeletal post-graduate training,
you must provide:
i. A  summary of the related hours of training
ii. Details regarding any examination procedures
iii. A   website link for the program/course, and
iv. Proof of attendance, e.g. certificate
