Beyond Trigger Point Dry Needling

Setting the Standard in Safety and Effectiveness Since 1994

Gunn IMS is a whole-body approach for the diagnosis and treatment of persistent myofascial pain syndromes including muscle, nerve, joint, tendon, bursal, fascial and biomechanical problems. The approach, using intramuscular dry needling, is based on the neuropathic dysfunction model developed by Dr C. Chan Gunn. This model looks at the whole body, not just isolated areas of pain, and considers dysfunction in the nervous system as the cause of persistent myofascial dysfunction and pain.

Online Course Offerings for Out-of-province Students

11/12/2020

Picture
Registration deadline to register for our Part 1A self-paced online course is January 31

Due to the safety concerns provided by the current pandemic, it is a challenge to provide multi-day in-person needling courses across the country.  In response to these challenges we have adjusted the UBC Gunn IMS certification course to include both online and in-person components. The online components of training will be run throughout the winter and the in-person components are planned for the spring at our currently scheduled locations (subject to ongoing circumstances with the pandemic). In reformatting the course this way, the risk of disruption to training schedules is minimized and learning components that are not required to be done in person can be completed remotely.

The reformatted course is comprised of three parts – Part 1A, Part 1B and Part 2, and will cover all the material that was covered in the traditional UBC Gunn IMS Certification Course.
  • Part 1A (online $1125) will run over the winter. It will include lecture material, training in the Gunn IMS neuropathic assessment, completion of the anatomy and theory exams, and the submission of a case study. This allows students to complete all the assessment requirements for certification, other than needling, over the winter.
  • Part 1B (in-person $1250) is scheduled for the spring. It will include two days of assessment and dry needling skills.
  • Part 2 (in-person $1250) will occur approximately two months after Part 1.  It will include two additional days of assessment and dry needling skills.

Courses are currently scheduled to take place in Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and the Greater Toronto Area (Burlington). Please see our course schedule for dates, course information for more details, or apply here for training.

*Please note that all Vancouver courses will follow the traditional model of 4 days in-person for part 1 and 3 days in-person for part 2. The online training is not applicable for Vancouver registrants.

COVID-19 and Dry Needling

4/29/2020

Updated May 9, 2020 - Added downloadable checklist

Is it safe to dry needle during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Can I treat patients with Gunn IMS right now during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Currently there are many health advisories in place outlining when physiotherapy and medical services requiring direct patient contact are appropriate, including the appropriate use of PPE. We all need to review the relevant federal, provincial and licensing college regulatory statements and act in a socially and professionally responsible manner - that is our individual responsibility as health practitioners. Once we have complied with the advisories related to providing direct patient care, either as physicians or physiotherapists, in a general sense, we then need to consider any dry needling-specific issues.

If I deem Gunn IMS treatment to be both indicated and appropriate for my patient, is it possible to provide COVID-free interaction surfaces (plinth, skin, gloves)?
Yes. Standard Gunn IMS protocol is that we disinfect the plinth surface between every patient with appropriate disinfectant, practitioners wash their hands and wear gloves disinfected with hand sanitizer, the patient's skin is disinfected with alcohol swabs, and the needles are sterile.

New research to be presented at the Orthopaedic Symposium in Toronto

4/19/2019

Picture
Lyndal Solomons and Lorrie Maffey, two of our senior instructors, will be presenting at the Canadian Physiotherapy Association's National Orthopaedic Symposium on June 9th. The presentation will include a general discussion about the Gunn IMS model as well as Lyndal's research regarding the use of Gunn IMS in the management of Achilles tendinopathy.

Management of mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy with exercise and intramuscular dry needling

Rehabilitative exercise remains the gold standard for conservative management of mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy (MPAT) but is ineffective in up to 44%. Intramuscular dry needling (IMDN) is being used increasingly often in the management of MSK conditions, including MPAT. A randomised controlled trial comparing exercise plus IMDN based on the Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) model with exercise and sham IMDN for MPAT showed: additional gains in Global Rating of Change at 12 weeks and 12 months for the IMDN group; and a gradual increase in gastrocnemius/soleus length over 12 months in the IMDN group, but a decrease in the sham IMDN group.

Chan Gunn Pavillion has opened!

3/30/2018

A new home for neuropathy teaching and research
The Chan Gunn Pavilion at UBC officially opened on March 15th, 2018.  UBC President and Vice-Chancellor, Santa Ono, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dermot Kelleher presided over the ceremony.
This new building is now the permanent home of UBC Gunn IMS dry needling certification courses, continuing education and research.

What does the title CGIMS mean?

3/6/2018

CGIMS is the designation for a doctor or physiotherapist who is certified in Gunn IMS
Dr. Gunn coined the term Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) in his early papers in the 1970’s.  His first dry needling courses were taught at the Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain (iSTOP) and were simply called IMS.  With changing times some American jurisdictions started using Dr. Gunn’s term when referring to all dry needling.  Additionally, courses were popping up with components of their curriculum purporting to include ‘IMS’.
